ReLex Managing Partner Rytis Satkauskas nominated for the Mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders

Human rights defenders are realists who take responsibility for their neighbours, their society and its future, and humanity as a whole. And so do we.

Against the backdrop of the global restriction of civic space and a wave of legislation restricting civic organisations and freedoms of assembly, association and expression, the work of human rights defenders is being impacted. Global support and awareness are therefore more important than ever.

UN OHCHR holds the most visible special procedures mandate in this regard, producing thematic reports that provide guidance and recommendations for UN Member States, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders. More importantly the mandate includes the task of liaising with individual human rights organisations, collecting, systematising their views and providing support through individual contacts and public events.

The work of the Special Rapporteur is guided not only by the member states, but also by civil society groups that define its direction and shape the outcome. We are proud of this nomination, resulting from many years of working closely with civil society groups and international NGO’s.

The mandate holder is to be appointed at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council.
